Anna Sui's Spring 2027 Collection Draws Inspiration from a Classic 1972 Vogue Feature

At the National Arts Club, Anna Sui unveiled her enchanting Spring 2027 Wonderment collection, a line that immerses viewers in a dreamlike realm inspired by the pages of Vogue. With whimsical prints, charming parasols, and ethereal lingerie, Sui's collection is a tribute to a bygone era of art and fashion.
Discovering a Visual Wonderland
The designer shared her creative journey in her show notes, revealing that her inspiration stemmed from a vintage 1970s Vogue issue. While on a quest for an Avedon photograph of an Ara Gallant hairstyle, Sui stumbled upon the stunning works of Howard Gardiner Cushing. She wrote, “What began as a search for a photograph suddenly became something else entirely: a new visual world opening before me.”
A Glimpse into an Iconic Beach House
This artistic exploration led Sui to the feature “An American Fantasy: The Long Island Beach House of Mrs. Justine B. Cushing,” which was originally published in the November 1, 1972 issue of Vogue. The article, captured by Horst P. Horst, showcases a lavish summer home that reflects the spirit of its owner and her daughters, built around Cushing's dazzling paintings. Architect Alexander McIlvaine designed the house to maximize space and light, creating a romantic environment where American beauty and leisure reign supreme.
