Apple Unveils Alarming Evidence Against Ex-Employee in OpenAI Case

In a heated legal battle, Apple has presented what it describes as "shocking evidence" against Chang Liu, a former employee accused of misappropriating trade secrets for OpenAI. This development follows the submission of Liu's Apple work laptop, which his legal counsel provided for investigation earlier this month.

Apple claims that Liu utilized confidential circuit schematics from the company in his new role at OpenAI. Furthermore, the tech giant alleges that OpenAI had knowledge of Liu's access to this proprietary information. According to Apple, Liu collaborated with OpenAI colleague Yu-Ting Peng to eliminate evidence after learning of the investigation into his activities.

The filing states, "The MacBook represents the very limited information Defendants provided so far… and shows Apple is not conducting ‘fishing expeditions’ but that its trade secrets are being used and evidence is being destroyed." Apple has also shared previous communications from Liu, which reveal his awareness of retaining access to Apple files even after leaving the company.

OpenAI, however, defends Liu's actions, arguing that he only accessed Apple files to assist former colleagues post-employment. The company suggests that Apple's issue stems from a common oversight regarding system access management.

Amid these allegations, Apple is pursuing a preliminary injunction to prevent OpenAI from utilizing its technology and is seeking expedited discovery, indicating that further former employees may also be involved in the case.
