At 88, Kenichi Horie Sets Sail for Another Record-Breaking Pacific Adventure

Kenichi Horie, an esteemed ocean adventurer, has announced his intention to embark on a solo, nonstop journey across the Pacific Ocean next spring, marking another chapter in his storied sailing career. The announcement came on his 88th birthday during a press conference in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, where he expressed his indomitable spirit and passion for sailing.

If successful, Horie will reclaim the record for the oldest person to complete such a voyage, a title he previously held after crossing the Pacific at age 83. This time, he plans to set sail from San Francisco in March, aiming to reach Japan within approximately two months. "The magma of my desire to sail has erupted," Horie declared, signaling his unwavering commitment to adventure.

Pioneering Spirit

Horie's sailing legacy began in 1962 when, at just 23 years old, he became the first person to sail solo and nonstop across the Pacific Ocean. His journey aboard the yacht Mermaid not only established him as a pioneer in ocean exploration but also inspired many through his bestselling book, “Kodoku: Sailing Alone Across the Pacific.”

A Record to Break

In March 2022, Horie made headlines by successfully completing a solo crossing from San Francisco to the Kii Channel off Cape Hinomisaki in Wakayama Prefecture, solidifying his place in the Guinness World Records as the oldest individual to achieve this feat. Now, as he prepares for another attempt, Horie emphasizes that this voyage is not meant to be his last, showcasing his relentless pursuit of new challenges on the high seas.
