Axon Considers Redesigning Cameras Amid Flock Vandalism Surge

In a recent discussion, Axon executives revealed that some law enforcement agencies are urging the company to alter the appearance of their automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) to distinguish them from Flock cameras. This request comes in response to escalating vandalism targeting Flock devices, prompting Axon to explore potential design changes.

During a now-removed webinar, Axon Chief Customer Officer Mike Wagers indicated that there has been significant conversation around redesigning their Outpost ALPR to avoid visual similarities with Flock. Axon CEO Rick Smith confirmed this dialogue, noting that some customers suggested altering the shape of the cameras to mitigate backlash.

Axon's Lightpost product, which integrates ALPR technology with existing streetlights, was also mentioned as a potential solution. Smith pointed out that these cameras are less prone to vandalism due to their elevated positioning, offering an added layer of security. He acknowledged customer feedback calling for a more distinctive design, as the current ALPR model is easily recognizable.

As the backlash against Flock’s surveillance practices grows, some municipalities are transitioning to Axon's cameras. Concerns have arisen over Flock's national network capabilities, allowing law enforcement from various states to access data from cameras outside their jurisdictions. This system has raised alarms, especially after reports of police misusing Flock cameras for unauthorized inquiries.

Smith described the situation as a 'hell of a storm,' as communities express discontent with Flock’s methods, including instances of vandalism where individuals have gone to great lengths to disable these cameras. Authorities have made several arrests related to these acts of destruction, demonstrating the intensity of public sentiment against Flock.
