Belgian PM Advocates Antwerp-Bruges Port as Key Trade Hub for India

During a significant event in Mumbai on September 4, 2026, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever emphasized the importance of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges as a crucial gateway for Indian exports to Europe. His remarks came during discussions on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which aims to bolster economic ties between India and Belgium.

De Wever highlighted that the proposed FTA would not only enhance trade between the two nations but also create new opportunities for businesses and young talent, ultimately leading to more resilient economies. He stated, "The Port of Antwerp-Bruges will be a key logistics link between India and Europe creating opportunities in diamonds, pharmaceuticals, food processing, maritime services, green hydrogen and infrastructure." He also noted that the agreement is projected to lower or eliminate tariffs on over 95% of goods traded.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal echoed the sentiment of strengthening bilateral relations, inviting Belgian companies to invest in India. He pointed out Maharashtra's potential as a strategic investment hub, asserting that the state aims to achieve a $1-trillion economy by 2030 with Belgium's support. Goyal underscored that the FTA, nearly 25 years in the making, would benefit various sectors including agriculture, fisheries, and small businesses across both regions.
