Can You Bring Back Shrunken Clothes? Expert Tips on Unshrinking Your Wardrobe

By Editor • September 4, 2026 • 1 min read

We’ve all experienced the heart-sinking moment of discovering that a favorite piece of clothing has shrunk, leaving it nearly unwearable. Recently, I faced this predicament when my beloved Saint Laurent silk shirt met an unfortunate fate after being tossed into the dryer during a family visit.

But before you resign yourself to a life without your favorite top, laundry expert Zachary Pozniak, co-owner of the luxury cleaning service Jeeves in New York, offers hope. According to Pozniak, unshrinking clothes is possible, provided you take the right steps.

Assessing the Damage

The first step, Pozniak advises, is to assess the fabric of your shrunken garment. Different materials react differently to shrinkage. For instance, minor shrinkage in cotton can often be corrected, while wool may present more of a challenge due to its fibers.

Techniques for Unshrinking

To start the unshrinking process, gentle stretching and steaming are key. Pozniak suggests using a steam iron to infuse the garment with moisture before carefully stretching it back to size on a flat surface or hanger. It’s important to avoid excessive pulling, which can distort the fabric further.

For more stubborn fibers, a combination of fabric conditioners and blocking techniques can help restore the garment’s original shape. With wool, dry cleaning with conditioning products may be necessary to revive the fibers.

Knowing When to Give Up

Despite these techniques, not every shrunken item can be saved. Pozniak emphasizes the importance of recognizing when a piece has reached its limits and to accept that it might be a lost cause.

As for my own shrunken silk shirt, I’m eager to try Pozniak’s advice and see if I can bring it back to life. Stay tuned for an update on my unshrinking journey!
