Charles Barkley has officially declared his intention to retire from the iconic show Inside the NBA after the upcoming NBA season. During a recent episode of The Bill Simmons Podcast, Barkley emphasized that unless his long-time colleague Ernie Johnson decides otherwise, next year will mark the end of his tenure on the show.

Since joining Inside the NBA in 2000, Barkley has been a pivotal figure alongside Johnson, who has hosted the show since 1990. Together, they have transformed the program into a staple of cable sports entertainment, known more for its engaging banter than traditional game analysis. The show's popularity is evident, boasting an impressive average of 3.5 million viewers for post-game coverage after the Pacers-Knicks Eastern Conference Finals in 2025, a figure that highlights its significance in the sports broadcasting landscape.

While this announcement is not Barkley's first retirement declaration, he stated his commitment this time is genuine. Previously, he had considered stepping away amid uncertainties regarding Warner Bros. Discovery's NBA broadcasting rights but opted to stay when the show's future was secured under ESPN. Barkley revealed that his decision to continue was motivated by a desire to support the production crew, and he reiterated his loyalty to Johnson, saying, “If he says [he’s] done, I’m done.” With both legends planning their exits, the challenge of replacing them looms large, particularly for Johnson, who has successfully managed the dynamic personalities of his co-hosts, including Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith.
