China's Embassy in Argentina Denounces Official for Flood Rumors

The Chinese embassy in Buenos Aires has publicly rebuked an Argentine government official for allegedly spreading false information regarding the recent devastating flood in Nepal. The official, Juan Pablo Carreira, a communications director in Javier Milei's administration, suggested that a Chinese state company was responsible for the disaster by constructing a hydroelectric facility near a glacier.
The catastrophic event occurred on August 26 when a mass of ice and rock collapsed from the Langtang Lirung glacier, triggering a flood that has already claimed over 1,050 lives in Nepal and resulted in 16 fatalities in China. The situation has left thousands missing, including more than 900 workers from hydropower plants.
In a statement, the embassy condemned Carreira's comments as “malicious rumours” aimed at tarnishing China’s international reputation. They argued that social media claims linking the flood to Chinese infrastructure were quickly debunked by satellite imagery and scientific assessments identifying the glacier collapse as the cause.
In response, government spokesman Adrián Ravier asserted that the administration only accounts for official statements, calling for clarity amidst growing political tensions as Argentina navigates its relations with China.
