Circadian Tea Atelier Blends Tradition and Modernism in Berlin

In the heart of Berlin's Funkhaus, a unique tea experience is brewing at Circadian, where the art of gyokuro tea meets modern design. Founded by Mahmoud Abdelhafez, this atelier brings together the rich traditions of Japanese tea culture and the sleek aesthetics of contemporary architecture.

A Space Reflecting Dual Heritage

Circadian occupies a thoughtfully renovated 230 square meter space within the historic Funkhaus, a former GDR radio broadcasting center. The design, influenced by both Bauhaus and Japanese principles, features an ambiance that harmonizes taste, touch, sight, and sound. Sunlight filters through large windows, casting light on the original Soviet-era timber flooring, while a bespoke concrete table separates the guest area from the serving space, fostering intimate gatherings.

Innovative Tea Rituals

Abdelhafez has reimagined the traditional tea ceremony by encouraging a more egalitarian experience. Guests enjoy Circadian’s ice-brewed gyokuro tea served in long-stemmed wine glasses, echoing the elegance of sake drinking. 'The enclosed glass shape concentrates the aroma, enhancing the experience,' Abdelhafez explains. This innovative approach transforms tea drinking into a refined art form, appealing to Berlin's creative and professional communities.

Preserving History While Embracing Modernity

Maintaining the integrity of Funkhaus was crucial to Abdelhafez, who has designed the atelier to respect the building's original features. With partition walls to create a compliant production area, the atelier blends old and new seamlessly. Copper tiles in the kitchen and minimalistic decor further reflect a focus on authenticity and craftsmanship. 'My goal was to amplify the authenticity of gyokuro,' he says, underscoring his commitment to the tea's rich heritage.
