Coral-Inspired Swing Installation Transforms Yantai's Coastline

A striking new installation on the coast of Yantai, China, invites visitors to experience a blend of art and nature through its coral-like design. Named "Among the Corals," this unique swing installation, created by XBTW Office, features twelve oversized white stainless-steel cylinders that evoke an underwater environment.

Located at the northwest corner of West Park on the Longfor Puti peninsula, the installation is strategically positioned to interact with the natural elements of the coastal landscape. The rhythmic ebb and flow of the tides, combined with the sea breeze and vibrant sunsets, further enhance the immersive experience as visitors navigate through the space.

Design Inspired by Nature

The design of the installation draws inspiration from coral colonies, with cylinders arranged in two distinct groups, both above and below a horizontal roof plane. This architectural choice allows for swings to hang beneath, encouraging visitors to sway gently while taking in the views. The varying heights and orientations of the cylinders create overlapping spaces, providing an inviting area for exploration and reflection.

A Play of Light and Texture

From afar, the installation resembles a collection of marine organisms, seamlessly blending into the coastal scenery. As onlookers approach, they are treated to glimpses of the surrounding tidal flats and ocean, with the cylinders framing these natural elements in ever-changing perspectives. The perforated surfaces of the cylinders are particularly noteworthy; inspired by the density of deep-sea fish schools, each cylinder features thousands of perforations that vary in size. These openings not only contribute to the aesthetic but also allow light to filter through, creating a dynamic visual effect after sunset, where the installation takes on a life of its own, resembling a group of breathing marine creatures.
