Criterion Collection Launches Its First Physical Store in Toronto

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

The Criterion Collection has made a significant leap into the Canadian film scene with the opening of its first physical outlet in Toronto. This exciting development is housed within Cinema Cellar, an independent home-video retailer located in the vibrant Entertainment District, specifically at 129 John Street, just a stone's throw from TIFF Lightbox and Scotiabank Theatre.

A Cinematic Takeover

The new store is not exclusively a Criterion shop; rather, it will prominently feature Criterion discs and sets throughout the duration of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Following the festival, the space will continue to serve as a hub for Criterion enthusiasts, dedicating at least three walls to the esteemed collection while also rotating in titles from other film labels.

Connecting Film Lovers

Anne Kawalerski, Chief Marketing Officer of Criterion, expressed the importance of creating a space for film lovers to physically explore and connect with cinema. “The work and the effort you put into it feels rewarding,” she noted, highlighting the desire for a tactile experience over online shopping. The store's opening on September 10 coincided with TIFF, marking a strategic move to engage with the film community in Canada.

A Rich Selection of Titles

Cinema Cellar's offerings include a diverse range of classic and contemporary films from around the globe, featuring notable Canadian titles such as David Cronenberg’s “Crash” and François Girard’s “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould.” The store aims to create a long-lasting presence for Criterion in Canada, fueled by a partnership with Blue Fox Entertainment Canada.
