Crocodile Attack Leaves Dog and Owner Shaken at Darwin Beach

In a startling incident at Lee Point beach in Darwin, a three-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Teddy survived a crocodile attack. The frightening encounter, which unfolded while Teddy was playing in shallow waters with his owner, Saphirah Gilboy, has prompted renewed warnings for beachgoers in the region.

Ms. Gilboy recounted the moment she witnessed the crocodile, estimated to be around two meters long, grab Teddy and throw him back into the water. Reacting instinctively, she jumped into the water without hesitation, determined to rescue her pet. "The first thing I saw was a tail, and then the head sort of came out of the water, and it’s thrown him," she said.

Fortunately, a passer-by who was a vet nurse came to their aid, helping to assess Teddy's condition and coordinating with local veterinarians. After spending the night at the vet, Teddy managed to pull through, though he was left with bite marks on his face and throat. Ms. Gilboy expressed her gratitude for the assistance, calling it a "miracle" that her beloved dog survived the ordeal.

In light of the incident, Sam Hyson, the director of wildlife operations for NT Parks and Wildlife, emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant near waterways. He reiterated that no area in the Top End can be deemed completely safe from crocodile threats, urging pet owners to keep their animals at least five meters from the water's edge.
