On a picturesque day in Manitoba, the air was filled with the enticing aroma of walleye sizzling over an open wood fire. At Eagle Nest Lodge, guests indulged in a shore lunch that was not just a meal, but a celebration of the fishing culture deeply rooted in Canadian tradition.
A Unique Fishing Lodge Experience
Nestled along the upper Winnipeg River, approximately 70 miles northeast of Winnipeg, Eagle Nest Lodge has been a family-run establishment for over 60 years, managed by the Pedruchny family. Guests can arrive either by boat or via the unique Cessna 208 Caravan, an amphibious aircraft that lands directly on the lodge's property, offering stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.
The lodge features six cozy cabins that can accommodate up to 40 guests, with amenities designed for comfort. Each cabin is equipped with modern conveniences and offers breathtaking views of the river, enhancing the overall experience.
Fresh-Caught Walleye and Culinary Delights
The highlight of the stay was undoubtedly the shore lunch, where the freshly caught walleye was prepared in various styles. The tradition of shore lunch has been celebrated in Canada for over a century, and Eagle Nest Lodge executes it impeccably. Guests enjoyed walleye fillets fried to perfection, alongside fresh-cut potatoes, homemade tartar sauce, and a delightful surprise—breaded mushrooms.
Participants in the fishing excursion aimed to catch “eater” walleye, perfectly sized at about 14 to 17 inches for the meal. The fishing competition was lively, with anglers frequently landing fish, thanks to the skilled guidance from the lodge's staff. The shared experience of catching and then savoring the fruits of their labor created a sense of camaraderie among guests.
Beyond the shore lunch, the culinary offerings at Eagle Nest Lodge were impressive. Guests were treated to a range of hearty breakfasts and delectable dinners, featuring everything from homemade waffles to prime rib, ensuring that no one left the table hungry.
