Dangote Launches Landmark IPO for Africa’s Largest Oil Refinery

By Editor • September 15, 2026 • 1 min read

In a groundbreaking move for the African investment landscape, Aliko Dangote, the continent's wealthiest individual, has officially launched an initial public offering (IPO) for his ambitious $19 billion Nigerian oil refinery. With a target of raising $1.6 billion from retail investors, this offering is being hailed as the largest of its kind in Africa.

At the launch event in Lagos, Dangote emphasized the IPO’s inclusive nature, branding it as "for the people" and aiming to allow widespread ownership among regular investors. The minimum investment is set at 5,250 naira (approximately $4), granting access to a bundle of 10 shares in the refinery, which boasts a staggering valuation of about $49 billion. Despite this significant public offering, Dangote maintains a stronghold on the refinery, retaining 87% of its ownership.

Investor enthusiasm has surged, particularly in light of rising global oil prices, which have been influenced by geopolitical tensions such as the US-Iran conflict. However, the IPO has not been without its critics. Concerns have arisen regarding the refinery's valuation, which some analysts believe may be inflated compared to its construction costs. Joachim McEbong, a senior analyst, expressed skepticism over the narrative of a "people's IPO" given Dangote’s substantial ownership stake.

As excitement builds, digital investment platforms in Nigeria experienced significant traffic following the IPO’s announcement, with some sites temporarily going offline due to overwhelming demand. Investors like Titi Adetoye are already keen to seize the opportunity, with plans to purchase significant shares of this potentially transformative venture for Nigeria’s oil market.
