Discovering Fun and Nature at The Farm at Avebury

For families seeking an unforgettable getaway, The Farm at Avebury in Wiltshire is a treasure trove of excitement and tranquility. This picturesque working farm, owned by the Hues family for generations, offers a perfect blend of charming accommodations and interactive animal experiences that have captivated children and parents alike.

After a scenic drive down a narrow farm road, my children, aged five and nine, were immediately enchanted by the sight of Aberdeen Angus and Highland cattle roaming the fields. The farm, previously known as Galtee More, has transformed six old stables into stylish holiday hideaways, welcoming guests since 2021. Each self-catering unit showcases its own unique character with playful names like Long Barrow and Greyweathers, making it easy for families to find a perfect fit for their needs.

We stayed in Long Barrow, where we were charmed by its pink plaster bathroom and cozy king-sized bedroom, tucked away on a separate floor from the children's twin room. It was ideal for our group, allowing friends to enjoy their own space in Greyweathers, which featured a fun climbing wall leading to a bunk bed.

Alice Hues, the farm's owner and a mother of three, has thoughtfully integrated delightful surprises throughout the property. The orchard boasts a wooden playground, while a play barn is filled with toys, from bouncy castles to ride-on diggers. An on-site cinema, The Granary, offers a cozy space for children to gather with beanbags galore, often frequented by Alice's own kids who love to make new friends during holidays.

During our visit, Alice introduced us to the farm's lively inhabitants, including a lamb that children could bottle-feed and playful piglets eager for attention. A highlight was the chance to groom ponies that Alice brought over, much to my daughters' delight. She also organized a memorable tractor ride to West Kennet Long Barrow, a 5,000-year-old site, and a visit to a local pumpkin farm for some seasonal fun.

For those seeking more adventure, Mud and Guts offers outdoor sessions, such as den-building, available for booking at the farm. While the allure of the farm is overwhelming, the nearby Avebury henge provides a magical experience with its unguarded stones, inviting visitors to touch and connect with history.

Dining options abound, but with young children, we opted for the convenience of cooking our own meals. The farm sells its own produce, including beef and lamb, and even provides pre-made meals for easy preparation. For larger gatherings, there are two event barns available for private functions.
