Domino's New Detroit-Style Pizza Misses the Mark

By Editor • September 1, 2026 • 2 min read

Domino's has entered the Detroit pizza scene with its new offering, the Domino, but the execution leaves much to be desired. Launched on August 31, 2026, this personal pizza is designed to resemble the iconic rectangular Detroit-style, yet it fails to capture its essence.

True Detroit-style pizza boasts a thick layer of cheese, with sauce layered on top, and is baked in forged-steel pans. Unfortunately, the Domino, while taking inspiration from this beloved dish, comes off more as a standard rectangular pan pizza. Upon opening the box, I noticed the crust lacked the signature browned edges that define a great Detroit pie.

I sampled three variations: Italian sausage, pepperoni, and a vegetable medley, hoping for the delightful mix of textures associated with authentic Detroit-style pizza. Instead, what I found was a disappointing crust that was more soft than crunchy. It seemed undercooked in areas, lacking the necessary crispness on the outside, which is typically complemented by a generous layer of cheese.

While the flavors were enjoyable, offering a savory and zesty profile, they didn’t elevate the pizza to the heights I expected. The dough appeared promising but ultimately fell short, leaving me longing for that perfect chewy yet crispy texture. With a few adjustments, such as a longer bake time and increased cheese on the crust, the Domino could transform into a much more appealing option.

Ordering through the Domino’s app was straightforward, allowing customization of toppings. However, the pricing structure was a bit confusing. A single-topping Domino is priced at $7.99, and adding toppings increases the cost, with my vegetable pizza costing $9.49. Fortunately, a promotional deal allows the purchase of multiple pizzas for $6.99 each, which might make it more appealing.

In summary, while the concept of a Domino-shaped pizza is clever, the execution of this Detroit-style variant lacks the necessary components to truly honor its roots. With some tweaks, it has the potential to become a worthy addition to Domino's menu.
