Renowned British singer-songwriter Elkie Brooks, often hailed as the Queen of Blues, has opened up about her vibrant past in the music industry. From her early days in Salford to sharing the stage with iconic bands, Brooks has experienced a remarkable journey spanning over six decades.
Born Elaine Bookbinder in 1945, Brooks made her mark in the 1960s cabaret scene, where she had the unique opportunity to perform alongside the Beatles. Despite the pressure of such a monumental act, she learned to manage her nerves by focusing on the music. "Before I went on stage, I used to drink Guinness and a few shots of brandy," she reminisced, highlighting her approach to overcoming stage fright.
After her stint with the Beatles, Brooks joined the band Dada in 1970, before teaming up with Robert Palmer to form Vinegar Joe in 1971. Following their split, she embarked on a successful solo career, most notably with hits like "Pearl’s a Singer" and "Sunshine After the Rain," culminating in 13 singles entering the UK Top 75. Currently, she is celebrating her illustrious career with The Long Farewell Tour, captivating audiences with her timeless music.
