Exploring Morocco's Majestic Rif Mountains in the Volkswagen Amarok PanAmericana

The rugged beauty of Morocco’s Rif Mountains was the perfect backdrop for an adventurous drive in the Volkswagen Amarok PanAmericana. This journey took us from the bustling streets of Tangier to the serene heights above Chefchaouen, known as the ‘Blue Pearl.’

Our expedition began at the Plaza España, a scenic plateau where we enjoyed a traditional Berber meal amidst towering Moroccan firs. With the local chef as our guide, we learned about the unique Abies marocana, a fir species endemic to the area, thriving at altitudes above 1,500 meters. This culinary interlude set the tone for our exploration of the breathtaking Talassemtane National Park, a UNESCO-recognized site dedicated to preserving this rare tree.

Journey Through Talassemtane National Park

In less than a day, we transitioned from Tangier to the heights of Talassemtane National Park. This nature reserve, established in 2004, spans nearly 590 km² and is characterized by steep gorges and lush forests. As we navigated the gravel roads, the Amarok's advanced four-wheel-drive capabilities were put to the test, allowing us to tackle the challenging terrain with confidence.

Our ascent provided stunning views of Chefchaouen, its famous blue-hued buildings standing out against the mountainous landscape. The origins of this unique coloration remain a topic of debate, but the communal effort to maintain the vibrant paint each year adds to the town's charm.
