Fire Incident Reveals Safety Oversights at $3.2 Billion AI Data Center

A significant fire at the Lake Mariner data center in Somerset, New York, has raised serious concerns regarding safety protocols and transparency. Occurring in early June, the blaze took place in an unfinished structure, leaving local firefighters ill-prepared to tackle the emergency.
Steve Matisz, chief of the Barker Fire Department, reported that his team entered the scene without critical information, facing dense black smoke and unidentified chemicals. Alarmingly, there was no functioning alarm system, no fire suppression measures in place, and three fire hydrants were out of service. The safety documents that should have guided their response reportedly perished in the fire, leading Matisz to describe the situation as “difficult.”
The Lake Mariner site, once a coal mine, is undergoing a $3.2 billion transformation into one of New York's largest AI data centers. TeraWulf owns and operates the facility, situated on land leased from a company owned by its own CEO. The operational responsibilities will be managed by Fluidstack, a UK-based AI firm, while Google has secured warrants for a future 14 percent equity stake and is set to back Fluidstack’s lease payments. The center is designed to meet the growing computational demands of AI companies, including Anthropic.
