Former Eagle Critiques West Coast's Shift Towards Profit Over Performance

As the West Coast Eagles grapple with a disappointing performance on the field, former midfielder Sharrod Wellingham has voiced concerns over the club’s current direction. He describes the Eagles as having become "conservative and vanilla," prioritizing financial success over athletic achievement after a lackluster season.

In 2026, West Coast finished at the bottom of the AFL ladder, securing only four wins, which brings their total victories to just 15 since the 2022 season. Wellingham, who played a significant role in Collingwood's premiership triumph in 2010 before joining the Eagles, believes that the club's complacency stems from its off-field successes. On the ABC Perth's SportsTalk program, he expressed fears that West Coast could follow the trajectory of other once-great clubs that have faded into obscurity.

Wellingham pointed to a critical decision made during the 2024 trading period, where the Eagles traded away their third pick to bring in co-captain Liam Baker from Richmond. He lamented that this move cost the team the chance to draft promising talent like AFL Rising Star Jagga Smith, who was ultimately picked by Carlton. He emphasized that the current culture at West Coast lacks the boldness needed for success, stating, "There is zero swag that comes out of West Coast… you’ve got to have some ruthlessness." Meanwhile, CEO Don Pyke remains optimistic, insisting at the club's end-of-season awards that the focus should be on reclaiming a place in the finals.
