Government and Jamaat-i-Islami Join Forces to Address Petroleum Levy Concerns

In a collaborative effort to alleviate the financial burden of the petroleum levy on the public, the federal government and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Pakistan have agreed to establish committees aimed at recommending reductions in fuel taxes. This decision was announced during a press conference in Lahore, featuring JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, and Prime Minister’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah.
Minister Iqbal revealed that the government has proposed the formation of an expert committee, requesting JI to create a similar body. Both parties agree on the necessity of providing relief to citizens, especially given the current tax rates of Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. “We will act upon the recommendations from these committees,” Iqbal stated.
During the press conference, Rehman highlighted that JI’s ongoing sit-ins, which have now spanned 19 days across over 20 locations, are driven by genuine public concerns rather than personal agendas. He emphasized the disproportionate tax burden on average citizens, noting that many non-taxable earners are still paying significant taxes on fuel. The JI has proposed the abolition of the petroleum levy altogether and expressed readiness to negotiate practical solutions without making unreasonable demands.
