Henry Winkler Stands Firm Against Title Change for 'Happy Days'

In a candid conversation on the latest episode of "In Depth With Graham Bensinger," Henry Winkler revealed his strong opposition to a proposed title change for the iconic sitcom "Happy Days." The ABC executives had suggested renaming the show to "Fonzie's Happy Days," capitalizing on the immense popularity of Winkler's character, Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli. However, Winkler felt that such a change would undermine the contributions of his co-stars.

Reflecting on his time as Fonzie, Winkler recalled a visit from ABC president Leonard Goldenson, who pitched the idea of rebranding the series. "I said, 'Sir, I’m really asking you not to do that… This would be a slap in the face,'" Winkler explained, emphasizing the show's success during its run. He believed the existing title was not only fitting but also a testament to the ensemble cast's chemistry.

Winkler's decision was also influenced by his concern for his fellow cast members, particularly Ron Howard, who portrayed Richie Cunningham. Howard had expressed feelings of being overshadowed by Fonzie's rise to fame. Winkler noted, "We can’t do [the show] if we are resentful or angry of each other," which motivated him to reject the title alteration. He also declined the opportunity to star in a spin-off series, valuing the camaraderie he shared with the cast.

Howard echoed Winkler's sentiments during a recent interview, stating that while he accepted Fonzie's stardom, a title change would have been unacceptable. "I would’ve left," he declared, underscoring his commitment to the integrity of the show. He credited Winkler's influence in helping to keep the original title intact, recognizing the importance of the ensemble dynamic in their success.
