Houthis Seize Key Island, Escalating Tensions in Bab al-Mandeb Strait

In a significant escalation of conflict in Yemen, the Iran-aligned Houthi forces have captured the strategic Perim Island located at the entrance of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. This move, confirmed by Yemeni government sources on September 11, 2026, allows the Houthis to tighten their control over a crucial shipping route connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.

The Yemeni government reported that its forces had retreated from Perim, which also included the mainland coastal town of Dhubab.
