Huawei's Pura X View: A Nostalgic Return to the Phablet Era

In a striking move reminiscent of early smartphone designs, Huawei has unveiled the Pura X View, a phone that challenges the industry’s move towards taller screens. Launched in China on August 20, this device features a wide 16:9.5 display, a thickness of just 6.68mm, and a hefty 7,000mAh battery, all while weighing 201 grams.
The Pura X View’s dimensions echo the original Galaxy Note from 2011, albeit with modern refinements; it measures approximately 144 by 86mm, showcasing the evolution of design over the past fifteen years. However, its reliance on HarmonyOS 7 without Google services could limit its appeal outside China, leaving potential international buyers uncertain.
While the Pura X View boasts impressive specs, including a screen-to-body ratio of 96.1%, it raises questions about usability. One-handed typing on such a wide screen has been criticized, presenting challenges that users may find difficult to navigate.
Despite its appealing design, pricing details remain elusive, with estimates ranging from 4,499 to 7,500 yuan. Huawei has faced backlash over Pura pricing in the past, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the device's market viability. The Pura X View's introduction signals a potential shift back to the broader screens of yesteryear, as companies like Samsung and Apple reconsider their design philosophies.
