Inaugural Ganga Aarti Lights Up the Thames in London

On September 13, 2026, the River Thames witnessed a remarkable cultural event as thousands of people gathered for the first-ever Ganga Aarti in London. This ceremony, which symbolizes light and gratitude, was organized by Chinmaya Mission UK in conjunction with the annual Totally Thames festival, celebrating 75 years of the charity's service.

The Ganga Aarti, a spiritual ritual traditionally held along the banks of the River Ganges in India, was recreated on the Thames to reflect the interconnectedness of nature, knowledge, and consciousness. Brahmacharini Shripriya Chaitanya, the Resident Teacher of Chinmaya Mission UK, emphasized the significance of this gathering, stating, "For generations, communities have gathered on the banks of Ganga to offer light in gratitude for the river, for nature and for all that sustains life."

Taking place on land near the historic Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, the ceremony featured large multi-tiered oil lamps, music, chanting, and prayers, all performed without any materials being placed in the river itself. The event not only aimed to unite the British Hindu community but also welcomed attendees from diverse backgrounds.
