Innovative Passive House Redefines Eco-Friendly Living in Hertfordshire

A newly constructed passive house has transformed a former bungalow site into a striking and sustainable residence in a serene Hertfordshire valley suburb. Known as Three Rivers Passive House, this impressive project is the latest creation by London’s Gbolade Design Studio.

Architectural Excellence and Design Features

Spanning 5,005 square feet, the two-storey home boasts five bedrooms and an expansive garden that gracefully adapts to the site's natural slope. Visitors approach the residence via a steep incline, which enhances the home’s dramatic reveal from the street. Its modern aesthetic is characterized by a sophisticated combination of Belgian long-format bricks, expansive glazing, and smoke grey charred larch cladding, establishing a contemporary silhouette amidst traditional neighboring houses.

A Harmonious Indoor-Outdoor Connection

The entrance features a striking American Oak pivot door, framed by elegant 4.5-meter-tall windows, leading into a spacious double-height entry hall. This area is designed to be the heart of the home, filled with natural light from a circular rooflight and opening into a central courtyard. The design reflects the architects’ West African heritage, promoting communal living while fostering seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Sustainable Living Approaches

On the ground floor, the layout includes a sunken living area, a dining and kitchen space, a gym, a home office, and leisure facilities such as a swimming pool and sauna. The property is tailored for multi-generational living, featuring a private suite on the ground floor that can function as an independent living unit. According to Lanre Gbolade, one of the studio’s founders, the project embodies a bold vision while maintaining exceptional sustainability, thanks to the use of low-carbon materials like Cross-Laminated Timber and Glulam, as well as renewable technologies like Air Source Heat Pumps and photovoltaic panels.
