Innovative Renovation: KOSMOS Architects Breathes New Life into Mallorcan Townhouse

In the picturesque village of Banyalbufar, Mallorca, KOSMOS Architects, in collaboration with designer Blanca Gardelegui, has revitalized a traditional townhouse, transforming it into a modern family home that embraces the principles of repair, adaptation, and reuse. Named Can Amor de la Isla, the project showcases an inventive approach to architecture that turns the challenges of its hillside location into a celebrated design narrative.

Embracing Existing Materials

The architects embarked on their journey by meticulously examining the original structure and its surroundings. Instead of discarding broken tiles and outdated fixtures, they repurposed these elements, breathing new life into the home. For instance, damaged ceramic tiles were reconfigured to create a stunning terrazzo floor, while an old door was ingeniously split to function as a folding door, optimizing space in the compact interior. Additionally, unique materials like oil funnels, ceramic roof tiles, and a cast-iron manhole cover were creatively transformed into lamps and stove bases, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and innovation.

A Unique Character in Design

While the renovation maintains the essence of the original structure, it introduces vibrant colors and modern elements that enhance its character. The use of traditional Mediterranean chain curtains instead of solid doors allows for an airy feel in the kitchen, while paint reshapes the spaces, establishing a fresh visual relationship. The architects have expertly balanced the old with the new, ensuring that the history of the building remains visible in every corner.

Functional Aesthetics

Among the few new features is a pulley system affixed to the facade, designed to facilitate the movement of materials in the steep terrain. This functional piece is paired with a spherical light that illuminates the pulley at night, adding an artistic touch to its practicality.
