This development comes at a crucial time, just weeks ahead of the national elections where Bolsonaro's son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, is set to challenge the current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Justice Flávio Dino's decision to unseal the investigation highlights suspicions that the film, titled "Dark Horse," received financial backing from dubious sources. Senator Bolsonaro is currently facing allegations of corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion, related to substantial funds obtained from a disgraced banker for the film's production.

Dino, an appointee of President Lula, pointed out that the investigation has uncovered a complex scheme involving the misuse of public funds, specifically through federal budget amendments and ties to the São Paulo city government. The Brazilian federal police recently conducted a raid targeting Mário Frias, a federal lawmaker and Bolsonaro ally, who allegedly funneled around 2 million reais (approximately $400,000) to a nonprofit associated with the film. There are strong indications that Frias may have played a significant role in a criminal network linked to this funding.

The Supreme Court of Brazil is currently in disarray, with accusations of corruption and political bias affecting several justices. Recently, a clash occurred between Dino and Justice André Mendonca, a Bolsonaro appointee, concerning the leadership of the federal police. This conflict reflects the ongoing chaos within the court, which has intensified following the collapse of Banco Master, a bank implicated in a fraud scheme involving numerous politicians and judges, including connections to Senator Bolsonaro and Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
