Jack Daniel's American Single Malt Whiskey: A Sweet New Contender Arrives

Jack Daniel's has officially entered the American single malt whiskey arena, a category that gained recognition from the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) in December 2024. Following the final rule on January 19, 2025, the distillery's take on this burgeoning category is set to hit shelves nationwide after a limited release in international duty-free locations.

Launched in June 2023, Jack Daniel's American Single Malt is crafted entirely from malted barley and adheres to the stringent standards that define American single malts. This involves mashing, distilling, and aging the whiskey in the United States, with a distillation proof of no more than 160 and aging in new or used oak barrels. The whiskey is aged for a minimum of four years in charred American oak barrels, followed by an additional three years in oloroso sherry casks, contributing to its unique flavor profile.

As the whiskey prepares for its wider release on August 25, 2026, curiosity surrounding its taste has grown. I recently sampled the spirit, employing my experience as a Certified Sommelier and whiskey enthusiast to evaluate its character. Pouring the whiskey into a Glencairn glass and allowing it to breathe, I noted its deep mahogany-amber color and rich aromas of dried fruits, tobacco, and candied walnuts.

The flavor profile reveals a harmonious blend of flavors, with creamy caramel and chocolate notes complemented by hints of rum raisin bread pudding and spiced toffee. Despite its robust 90 proof, the whiskey exhibits a surprisingly smooth palate, typical of Jack Daniel's signature charcoal-filtered process. The sweetness is balanced by nutty and slightly salty undertones, making it a versatile choice for both sipping neat or mixing in cocktails.

While Jack Daniel's American Single Malt offers a softer approach compared to traditional Scotch whiskies, it may not satisfy die-hard Scotch aficionados who favor the complex, earthy flavors of single malts from Scotland. However, its accessible sweetness and velvety texture are likely to appeal to American whiskey drinkers. The whiskey's easy-drinking nature positions it as an excellent introduction to the single malt category, appealing to those who appreciate a smooth and balanced spirit.

With a retail price of $74.99 for a 1-liter bottle, the American Single Malt is a more accessible option than the previous limited-release, which was priced at $99.99. It’s important to note that this whiskey is distinct from the higher-priced Jack Daniel's Twice Barreled Special Release American Single Malt, which averages around $450 today. The upcoming nationwide availability is expected to make this whiskey a staple in many liquor cabinets, appealing to both seasoned whiskey lovers and newcomers alike.
