Joshua Wong Acknowledges Role in Pushing for Sanctions Against China

By Editor • September 2, 2026 • 1 min read

Joshua Wong Chi-fung, a prominent opposition figure currently imprisoned in Hong Kong, has openly admitted to orchestrating efforts aimed at instigating international sanctions against the Chinese and Hong Kong governments six years ago. During a High Court hearing on Wednesday, Wong, 29, revealed his collaboration with Nathan Law Kwun-chung, a former lawmaker now in exile, among others.

Wong's actions included encouraging foreign businesses to refrain from investing in mainland China and advocating for an Israeli forensic technology company to cease its partnership with the Hong Kong police force. His admission sheds light on the extensive strategies employed by pro-democracy activists to rally global support against Beijing's tightening grip on the region.
