Jury Weighs Truthfulness of Key Witness in Triple Murder Case

A jury in Townsville has begun deliberating in the high-profile trial of Darryl Young, who faces serious charges related to a tragic shooting incident that left three people dead and another severely injured.

The 63-year-old grazier is accused of murdering Mervyn Schwarz, Maree Schwarz, and Graham Tighe at his cattle station in Bogie, Queensland, on August 4, 2022. He has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Justice Christopher Johnstone instructed the jurors on Wednesday to evaluate the credibility of Ross Tighe, who survived the attack and testified that he witnessed Young shoot his family. Tighe, the brother of Graham Tighe, also recounted being shot himself during the incident, although he did not have the bullet removed.

In closing arguments, defense attorney Anthony Kimmins suggested that Tighe could potentially be the actual perpetrator, a claim that prosecutor David Nardone dismissed as mere fantasy. Justice Johnstone noted that Kimmins did not challenge Tighe's truthfulness during cross-examination, urging jurors to critically assess his evidence.

Throughout the three-week trial, jurors heard from multiple witnesses, including those who reported seeing Young at the scene shortly before the shooting. Prosecutors presented evidence linking ammunition found at Young's home to that used in the shootings, while also introducing testimony about Young's angry demand for a meeting with the victims the night before the incident.

As the jury deliberates, Justice Johnstone reminded them that accepting Young's alibi does not automatically result in a not guilty verdict, and they must carefully weigh all evidence presented during the trial.
