Katie Lee Biegel, known for her role on Food Network's The Kitchen, embarks on a new journey with the documentary short Top of the World, which chronicles the remarkable history of the Windows on the World restaurant. Set against the backdrop of the World Trade Center, this poignant film delves into the lives of those who made the restaurant a culinary landmark before the tragic events of 9/11.

Inspired by a Captivating Read

The idea for the documentary sparked when Biegel was gifted Tom Roston’s book, The Most Spectacular Restaurant in the World, by Chef Marc Murphy during a taping of her show. Captivated by its storytelling, both Biegel and her husband, Ryan Biegel, envisioned a documentary that would bring the restaurant's rich history to life. After a few years of discussions, Ryan took the initiative to turn their vision into reality.

Challenges in Bringing the Story to Screen

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the project, Katie Lee faced significant hurdles, particularly in fundraising. "There were several times when we thought this was not going to happen just due to the sheer finances of raising money to make a documentary," she noted. Their persistence paid off when they secured collaborations with Time and Tribeca Studios, who were drawn to the documentary’s historical significance and connection to New York.

Highlighting the Voices Behind the Legacy

Top of the World features contributions from notable figures like chef Michael Lomonaco and restaurateur Joe Baum, who helped shape the restaurant’s identity. The film includes archival footage narrated by Denis Leary, showcasing the diverse workforce at Windows, which employed over 400 individuals from various countries. Biegel emphasizes the vital role of immigrants in the restaurant industry, expressing her hope that audiences will view their stories with empathy.

The documentary premieres on CNN on Labor Day and is part of Biegel's evolution in the food media landscape, as she explores new avenues for storytelling through platforms like her podcast and YouTube channel.
