Kimi Antonelli showcased his dominance in the 2023 racing season by clinching victory at the Spanish Grand Prix, marking his eighth win out of 14 races. The Mercedes driver capitalized on a pivotal moment when McLaren's Lando Norris, who was leading the race, fell victim to poor timing surrounding a virtual safety car.
Norris had a strong start from pole position and seemed in control as he extended his lead. However, disaster struck on lap 15 when the virtual safety car was deployed just as Norris reached the pit exit. This unfortunate timing allowed Antonelli and Red Bull's Max Verstappen to pit under the VSC conditions, gaining crucial time while Norris was forced to continue racing.
After finally making his pit stop, Norris faced further issues as his crew struggled with the right-side wheels, leading to an unusually long seven-second stop. By the time he rejoined the race, he was in fifth place, severely diminishing his chances for victory. Despite making a spirited effort to recover, he could only finish in third, behind Antonelli and Verstappen. With this win, Antonelli has solidified his lead in the championship standings, now holding an impressive 81-point advantage over his teammate George Russell.
