Lebanon's Schools Struggle to Balance Education and Displacement Amid Ongoing Conflict

In the small village of Froun, southern Lebanon, schools are grappling with a dual purpose: educating students while also providing refuge for the many displaced due to ongoing conflict. Abbas Makki, the principal of a local school, is preparing for the return of students, even as his institution continues to serve as a shelter for those who have lost their homes. The devastation from recent Israeli airstrikes is evident, with rubble scattered throughout the village and basic utilities still unavailable.

Challenges of Reopening

The public school year is set to commence on September 15, but the reopening faces significant hurdles. With many families still displaced, the school cannot operate as a traditional learning environment. Maysoun Chehab from UNESCO emphasized the difficulty of balancing the needs of displaced families with the educational requirements of students. The Lebanese government has promised that no displaced person will be forced out of a school without a safe alternative, but the logistics remain daunting.

Impact of Recent Violence

Recent escalations in violence have further complicated the situation. On a single day, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including children, underscoring the ongoing dangers that residents face. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that since the onset of hostilities in March, over 4,381 people have lost their lives due to the conflict. As schools prepare to reopen, the grim reality is that hundreds of thousands remain displaced, and the path to normalcy seems increasingly uncertain.

Hope Amidst Devastation

Despite the overwhelming challenges, there are signs of resilience. Local residents, such as Soujoud Ramadan, are adapting by setting up small businesses near the school, hoping for a return to normalcy. With government plans for prefabricated housing and potential rehabilitation of damaged schools, there is a glimmer of hope for the future. However, educational experts warn that without immediate and effective action, Lebanon risks losing an entire generation to the impacts of ongoing conflict.
