Legacy of a Fallen Student: Art Dreams Cut Short by War

In a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during World War II, the Wadatsumi no Koe memorial museum in Tokyo has received a significant donation that sheds light on the life of Itaru Maruo, a promising art student who tragically lost his life in the conflict.

Maruo, who was just 25 years old at the time of his death, was swept up in the turmoil of the war as he was conscripted by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1944. Initially a student at a prestigious university, he harbored dreams of becoming an artist. However, his aspirations were abruptly halted when he was deployed to China under a wartime mobilization program. Unfortunately, Maruo's health deteriorated, leading to multiple hospitalizations before he ultimately succumbed to illness at an army hospital in Manchuria on August 30, 1945—just two weeks after Japan's surrender. His remains have never been returned to his homeland.

This past July, a relative of Maruo's honored his memory by donating approximately 200 personal items, including his memoirs, to the memorial museum located in Bunkyo Ward, not far from the University of Tokyo's Hongo Campus. These artifacts serve as a powerful testament to the lives of countless young individuals who were lost during the war.
