In Durban, the Musgrave Library has been permanently closed, while Johannesburg struggles with seven libraries that remain shut and partially demolished. This alarming situation arises in a nation where 43% of households lack books, exacerbating a reading crisis among children.
Zoë Human, host of Politically Aweh, emphasizes the importance of public participation in decisions regarding these community assets. She encourages residents to familiarize themselves with local governance and engage in council meetings. Activist Mbali Ntuli from the Ground Work Collective suggests practical steps for citizens to take, such as connecting with their ward councillors and obtaining library cards, which can help demonstrate the libraries' community value.
