MAD Unveils Plans for a Dance Hub in Rotterdam’s Historic Warehouse

In a bold architectural venture, MAD has announced its transformation of a 1923 art deco warehouse into Danshuis, a vibrant center for dance set to open in 2030. Located on Rotterdam’s south bank of the River Maas, the 9,500-square-meter facility will unite both amateur and professional dancers under one roof.
Danshuis will feature fourteen dance studios, an exhibition space, a gym, a café, and a rooftop venue designed for large-scale public events. A unique vertical foyer will connect the various floors, while outdoor areas will provide access to the scenic riverfront.
Ma Yansong, founder of MAD, emphasizes the synergy between Danshuis and the nearby Fenix museum, which focuses on migration stories. He stated, "Movement goes beyond architecture, becoming part of the character of the district," reflecting a seamless dialogue between the two cultural landmarks.
Organized by the Droom en Daad Foundation, Danshuis aims to cater to diverse age groups and skill levels, promoting both professional productions and community involvement. Laura Dufour, director of Danshuis, envisions it as a welcoming space for local communities and international dance professionals alike, celebrating the Netherlands’ legacy as a dance hub.
