Major Raid Uncovers Millions in Illegal Tobacco and Vapes in Australia

The Australian Border Force (ABF) recently conducted a significant operation that led to the seizure of over 1.7 million illegal cigarettes and thousands of vapes across Western Australia and the Northern Territory. This operation, dubbed Operation Tempest, is part of a larger effort to combat the illegal tobacco trade, with authorities emphasizing the considerable financial impact of these illicit goods.

During the six-day blitz, officials discovered a staggering haul valued at more than $814,000, which translates to nearly $4 million in lost taxes. The raids, which took place late last month, involved 66 locations and included a mix of retail shops, car yards, and even residential properties. Authorities identified 66 individuals of interest and have since sought the closure of 15 businesses linked to these illegal activities.

Details of the Seizure

In the Northern Territory, inspectors from NT Health and the Australian Taxation Office uncovered over 300,000 cigarettes and more than 1,500 vapes in their searches. In Western Australia, the ABF targeted four storage facilities and other sites, seizing approximately 1.46 million cigarettes, 197 kg of loose-leaf tobacco, and nearly 8,000 vapes. The operation also yielded other illicit items, including MDMA and drug paraphernalia, indicating a broader network of criminal activity.

Law Enforcement Response

ABF Commander Greg Dowse highlighted that criminal enterprises are constantly adapting their strategies to evade detection. He emphasized that a unified approach among various law enforcement agencies is crucial to effectively disrupt these networks. Australian Federal Police Detective Acting Superintendent Pixie Fuhrmeister reiterated the commitment to proactively target and dismantle these illegal operations, warning those involved that ongoing enforcement actions will continue.
