Mandalay Airport Closed Following Drone Attack Amid Ongoing Conflict

Mandalay Airport, the second-busiest airport in Myanmar, was ordered to shut down for two days following a drone attack attributed to pro-democracy rebels. The closure, confirmed by security sources, began on Friday, September 11, 2026, after six drones reportedly targeted the facility the previous afternoon.

The military-backed government of Myanmar announced that the attack caused no casualties but significantly disrupted flight operations. A security source, who wished to remain anonymous, indicated that the closure was a precautionary measure, stating, "Mandalay airport is closed for today and tomorrow." Another officer at a different airport corroborated this information, revealing that operations at Mandalay would remain halted until September 13, 2026, for maintenance.

This incident represents a rare rebel attack in a major urban area, which has typically been a stronghold for the military following the coup in 2021 that ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's government. The military has been engaged in intense conflicts with various pro-democracy and ethnic guerrilla groups, with drone warfare becoming a notable tactic for both sides.
