Marie-Lou Garcia, a Paris-based illustrator, has transformed the tranquility of everyday moments into serene illustrations, following a rediscovery of her artistic passion during the pandemic. From Graphic Design to Illustration

After a decade spent in graphic design, Garcia found herself yearning for creative fulfillment. The lockdown in 2020 reignited her passion for drawing, prompting her to purchase oil pastels and dedicate time to her craft. "I have always drawn. But during my graphic design studies, I completely stopped," she shared with Creative Boom. With newfound determination, she decided to pursue illustration full-time, leaving her graphic design career behind.

Capturing Moments and Creating Textile Art

Garcia's artwork is inspired by personal experiences, such as her cherished memories from trips and daily life. She recalls a trip with a friend where a simple moment, like eating a Figolu cookie by the river, became a source of artistic inspiration. This ability to save moments for later reflection is a theme she shares with other creatives, emphasizing the importance of presence in the creative process. Additionally, her background as a textile graphic designer allows her to seamlessly translate her illustrations onto scarves and other textile pieces, considering how her designs will be worn and folded.

Embracing Change and Artistic Politics

Garcia's journey has not been without challenges. Reflecting on her early career, she recalled feeling lost after her studies, struggling to find direction. However, her move to Paris opened up new opportunities that ultimately shaped her into the artist she is today. Alongside her illustrations, she co-founded Studio Sthéno, a graphic design and illustration studio, where she has honed her skills and adapted her approach to creativity. Garcia is also vocal about the political aspects of her work, believing in the importance of discussing political themes through her art. Despite the challenges faced by illustrators in an evolving industry, including the rise of AI-generated images, she remains committed to her craft and encourages fellow artists to embrace their freedom and creativity.
