Mercury's Shrinking Secrets Revealed: Planet's Radius Declines by 12 Kilometers

A groundbreaking study from Hokkaido University has revealed that Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, has experienced a significant reduction in its radius over the past 4.6 billion years. The research, published in Geophysical Research Letters, indicates that Mercury's radius has diminished by nearly 12 kilometers due to its internal cooling process.

Mercury's current radius is approximately 2,440 kilometers. This decrease has been evidenced by the numerous wrinkle ridges observed on the planet's surface, which are a result of the ground contracting as it cools. Previous estimates of the planet's shrinkage were complicated by the uneven distribution of geological features, leading to potential underestimations.

Innovative Research Methodology

Under the leadership of postdoctoral researcher Gaku Nishiyama, the team employed a novel analytical approach to investigate this phenomenon. They considered that many contractional features might have been hidden beneath craters caused by meteor impacts and lava flows. By measuring the surface roughness created by these events and comparing it to the contractional features, the researchers identified a clear trend: areas with greater terrain roughness, particularly around craters, had fewer contractional features.

Future Insights with BepiColombo Mission

Looking ahead, the Japan-European joint exploration mission, BepiColombo, is set to reach Mercury in November. This mission will conduct high-precision terrain observations, which Nishiyama believes could further refine estimates of Mercury's shrinkage. As more detailed topographical data becomes available, scientists anticipate that the understanding of the planet's contraction will deepen.
