Steven Hall, known by his stage name Nirosta Steel, has publicly apologized for an incident involving his social media activity that has sparked concern among fans. The musician faced backlash after it was revealed that he followed accounts on the Chinese platform Xiaohongshu, which appeared to feature AI-generated images of young boys.

The uproar began on August 24 when a user on X, formerly Twitter, named @simonwestgate, shared a post questioning Hall’s decision to follow these accounts, which are associated with the term 'shotacon', a reference to the erotic depiction of underage boys. The post included screenshots of Hall's 'Following' list, displaying several accounts featuring young boys, some of which were shirtless and seemingly AI-generated. Following the incident, Hall's social media account was deleted.

Hall's Response

In a statement addressing the situation, Hall explained that he followed numerous accounts in a moment of haste after hearing from his husband about his music gaining traction on Rednote. He expressed shock upon discovering the nature of the accounts he had unknowingly followed, stating, “I did not realize that a few of the accounts contained highly toxic content.” He emphasized that these accounts do not reflect his personal interests and acknowledged the need for more caution in his social media interactions. Hall also pointed out that discussions around the incident may be influenced by ageism and homophobia.

As he prepares for upcoming performances at New York's Nightclub 101 on September 10, 11, and 12, as well as the Pitchfork Music Festival in London, Hall has urged fans to understand his situation, calling for a bit of grace as he navigates the complexities of the internet.
