Nintendo Switch 2 Firmware Update Brings VRR Support

By Editor • September 10, 2026 • 1 min read

Nintendo has officially introduced a significant update for the Switch 2, enhancing its gaming capabilities with the addition of variable refresh rate (VRR) support. This feature, which allows the console to adjust its refresh rate in accordance with a game's frame rate, is now available when the device is docked and used in TV mode.

The introduction of VRR aims to provide a smoother gaming experience by minimizing screen tearing, particularly beneficial for titles that may experience fluctuating frame rates. This development aligns the Switch 2 with other next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, both of which have long offered this technology.

In addition to VRR support, the latest firmware update, version 23.0.0, also includes a new toggle for handheld boost mode, accessible via quick settings. This enhancement is expected to further improve performance during portable play.
