Ntsal Studio Crafts Dynamic Visual Identity for Film Festival

Cairo's Ntsal studio has unveiled a captivating visual identity for the 18th edition of the Panorama of the European Film festival, drawing inspiration from the complex narratives that unfold in cinema.

At the heart of Ntsal's design approach is the concept of time in film, which often deviates from a straightforward trajectory. Nardine Shenouda, a partner and design director at Ntsal, explained that the team sought to explore how design could emulate the nonlinear storytelling found in movies. This led to the creation of vibrant graphic patterns that echo a timeline that stretches and shifts, symbolizing the interconnectedness of events throughout the festival.

The studio not only focused on the overall visual aesthetics but also developed a unique custom typeface named NT Panorama Naskh. This typeface pays homage to traditional Arabic calligraphy, particularly the styles used in vintage poster credits and newspapers. Shenouda noted the rawness and manual labor that influenced this design, which stands apart from conventional Arabic typography through its reliance on the baseline.

Furthermore, Ntsal has enhanced the festival experience by designing an interactive checklist that allows attendees to curate their own viewing schedule. This thoughtful addition encourages festival-goers to engage actively with the event, creating a personalized journey through the various screenings.
