Oman Delays Hormuz Talks Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Oman has decided to postpone a scheduled meeting with Iran and other regional nations that was set for Monday, intended to address shipping concerns in the Strait of Hormuz. The Omani Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, announced the postponement on X, citing the need for consensus among participating countries.

The meeting, which was to take place in Muscat, aimed to facilitate discussions on maritime management in the crucial waterway. Iranian officials confirmed the delay was made at the request of some regional countries, highlighting the complexities surrounding the talks.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has raised alarms regarding security in the southern regions of the country due to a rise in attacks from Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi forces. Alerts were issued for cities including Najran, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Abha, but these were later lifted by the Saudi Civil Defense. This uptick in hostilities follows the Houthis' declaration of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, which has seen them targeting Saudi vessels.

Further complicating matters, the transit of commodity vessels through the Strait of Hormuz has dramatically decreased, with daily movements dropping to single digits over the weekend. Preliminary data indicated that only four vessels exited the Gulf, well below the average of 14 per day.

As the situation develops, oil prices have surged, with Brent crude exceeding $107 per barrel, a reflection of the escalating tensions and fears of potential disruptions in global energy supplies.
