OpenAI has announced a significant advancement in healthcare technology by integrating ChatGPT Health with Epic's electronic health record (EHR) system, which serves over 325 million patients. This integration allows clinicians to import and query patient data more effectively.
With the new capabilities, healthcare professionals can access vital information such as appointment notes, lab results, and medication histories, streamlining their workflow. Additionally, the integration offers read-only access to health records, ensuring that AI cannot alter any data.
OpenAI also introduced a Healthcare Public Data plug-in, which aggregates information from sources like ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed, assisting clinicians in determining trial eligibility and medication details. This new feature aims to enhance the synthesis of crucial healthcare data.
Despite these advancements, OpenAI continues to stress that its AI solutions are not designed for diagnosis or treatment. The company has faced legal challenges related to safety concerns, including a recent lawsuit from a pastor claiming he received dangerous medical advice from ChatGPT. However, a review of over 4,300 physician responses indicated that 99.1% were safe, highlighting the potential benefits paired with caution in deployment.
