Oracle's Renewable Energy Initiative Aims to Mitigate Local Concerns Over Data Center Development

Oracle is attempting to address local opposition to its Project Jupiter data center in New Mexico by announcing plans for a significant investment in renewable energy. The tech giant revealed on September 8 that it is seeking proposals for 2 gigawatts of renewable energy projects, a move that coincides with growing protests against the environmental effects of the data center.

The Project Jupiter data center, developed in collaboration with OpenAI, represents a substantial $165 billion investment in the Santa Teresa area. This initiative is part of the larger Stargate AI infrastructure project, which was introduced by former President Donald Trump in 2025. However, the project has encountered significant hurdles, including local protests and legal challenges focused on its potential environmental impact.

Despite Oracle's renewable energy proposal, experts point out that the data center will still rely on fuel cells that utilize natural gas. Michael Thomas, CEO of Cleanview, highlighted this discrepancy in a recent LinkedIn post, stating that while the 2 GW of renewable energy investment is noteworthy, it does not directly power the data center itself. He referred to it as a 'synthetic' matching program, indicating that the renewable projects are not a direct solution to the center's energy consumption.
