Pakistan Advocates for Diplomacy Amid US-Iran Tensions

Pakistan's commitment to dialogue and diplomacy remains steadfast, despite escalating tensions between the US and Iran. Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi expressed optimism during a briefing on Wednesday, highlighting Pakistan's ongoing role in mediating peace in the region.

Andrabi recounted that Pakistan has been actively involved in facilitating discussions since the onset of hostilities, which intensified following US-Israeli actions against Iran in February. Notably, Pakistan brokered a ceasefire in April, halting the most severe clashes, although intermittent skirmishes continue, particularly in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the SCO summit, reiterating Pakistan's dedication to peace and advocating for the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a pathway to stability. Additionally, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar engaged with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, underscoring ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir's visit to Tehran last week emphasized Pakistan's efforts in addressing the US-Iran conflict. Discussions focused on regional de-escalation and the critical reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, vital for global energy supplies. Andrabi noted that these diplomatic initiatives have spurred further engagement from regional leaders, including those from Oman and Qatar.

In a separate development, the FO welcomed the Permanent Court of Arbitration's recent ruling, reaffirming the validity of the Indus Waters Treaty between Pakistan and India. The PCA's decision rejected India's attempts to suspend the treaty, which has been a source of contention since New Delhi's unilateral actions last year. Andrabi emphasized that the ruling underscores the importance of adhering to international law regarding water rights.
