Patagonia Takes Legal Action Against Trump Over Utah Monument Reductions

In a bold move, outdoor retailer Patagonia has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in response to its recent decision to significantly reduce the size of two national monuments in Utah—Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante.

Patagonia's CEO, Ryan Gellert, expressed deep concern regarding this decision, stating that it undermines tribal sovereignty and disregards extensive efforts to develop management plans for these culturally vital areas. The Trump administration’s actions, taken in July, slashed the size of each monument by approximately 90%, thereby opening vast public lands to activities such as oil drilling and uranium mining.

The lawsuit aims to revive previous legal challenges that contested the Trump administration's authority to shrink these monuments, which were originally designated under the Antiquities Act by Presidents Obama and Clinton. Patagonia maintains that this act does not grant the power to revoke a monument's designation.

In a statement from the Interior Department, officials defended the reductions, arguing they correct previous abuses of the Antiquities Act and promote responsible resource management. Utah’s Governor Spencer Cox and other state officials have backed the administration’s actions, contending that the areas designated as monuments are excessively large for the protection of the antiquities they harbor.

Indigenous groups view the lands in question as sacred, with Bears Ears being the first national monument established at the request of Native American tribes, marking a significant moment in U.S. history for tribal co-management of protected areas. The lawsuit from Patagonia underscores a broader concern about environmental policies under the Trump administration, which Gellert claims have aggressively dismantled protections for air, water, and land resources.
