Producer Sues Tea Shop for Profit Exclusion on Hit Film Obsession

In a dramatic twist in Hollywood, Leonora Ann Darby, an executive producer on the successful film Obsession, has filed a lawsuit against her fellow producers, claiming she was unfairly excluded from profits due to her vital contributions.

The lawsuit, lodged in California state court on Monday, names James Harris and Mark Lane, co-founders of Tea Shop Productions, alleging they breached a prior agreement that promised her equitable treatment within the company. Darby asserts that although she was credited as an executive producer, she functioned as a lead producer and played a crucial role in the film's success.

Despite a modest budget of $750,000, Obsession has grossed over $500 million globally, but Darby claims she has been cut out of the net profits she was promised. Her attorney, Thomas K. Richards, stated, “Ms. Darby has brought serious and substantial claims, supported by a detailed factual record. She is confident in her case and intends to pursue it fully.”

Darby joined Tea Shop Productions in 2019 and has since produced several films, including The Surfer (2024) and A Banquet (2021). In 2024, she negotiated a deal that entitled her to a third of the net profits from films she lead-produced, alongside participation in collection account management agreements.

The lawsuit highlights how Darby intervened when the editing of Obsession was compromised, advocating for the restoration of the original director's cut and facilitating additional reshoots. Additionally, her creative input, particularly regarding character development and plot elements, was instrumental in shaping the film's final version.

However, as the film soared to success, Darby alleges that Harris and Lane began to sideline her contributions. They reportedly failed to acknowledge her role publicly, excluding her from the film's premiere and claiming she would not receive any ongoing participation in profits from Obsession.

After initial discussions about profit distributions, Darby claims her access to financial information was revoked, and a proposed consulting arrangement was later rescinded in favor of a new agreement that excluded her from profit participation altogether. Her lawsuit seeks full transparency regarding profits from Obsession and other projects, claiming a pattern of broken promises and diminishing recognition for her contributions.
